I write to express my admiration and deep respect for the young people who organized and participated in Wednesday’s rally in support of their fellow students and their family detained by ICE. In a moment when so many adults feel powerless, these Portland students demonstrated courage, clarity and compassion—and, in so doing, showed us what true citizenship looks like.
It takes real bravery for teenagers to stand in front of hundreds of people and speak openly about injustice. They did so not for themselves, but for classmates who can no longer stand beside them. They reminded us that behind immigration policy are actual human beings: gifted students, loyal friends, devoted siblings—young people who dreamed of contributing to this community and this country.
Student organizers and speakers demonstrated that moral leadership does not require a title or an office, only conviction. Their effort, their words and their insistence on dignity and respect were an invitation to all of us to imagine a city, state and country that welcomes determination and talent, and prioritizes fairness, not fear. As such, we owe them more than applause. We owe them action, accountability and the same loyalty they showed their friends.
Their hope gives me hope. And their leadership shows us that a better future is possible.
