Dorothy Davis
HALLOWELL – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy “Dottie” Gayle Bergman Davis on Nov. 28, 2025.
Dottie was born August 24, 1930, in Tulsa, Okla., the daughter of Gale and Dorothy (Hull) Bergman. She attended public school in Tulsa and graduated from the University of Tulsa in 1952 with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. In August of that year she married fellow Tulsan, James Wendell Davis (her college Chemistry Lab instructor) and began a wonderful life adventure.
They lived in Corvallis, Ore. for two years while Wendell earned his PhD in Biochemistry and where their first child, Timothy, was born in 1954. Twin sons, Glen and Gary, were born while living in Oak Ridge, Tenn. in 1956, and their daughter, Margaret, was born in St. Louis, Mo. in 1958.
She always laughed when relating, “every time we moved we had another child so we stayed in St. Louis for 50 years.”
Dorothy worked as a medical technologist in Albany, Ore. and later for 26 years at St. Joseph Hospital Laboratory in Kirkwood, Mo.
Throughout her life she was active in music (flute, church choirs, recorder and hand bells), Boy and Girl Scouts with her children, a variety of church programs, traveling, hot air ballooning, camping, gardening and after moving to Maine, hiking, snowshoeing, swimming, and kayaking. Her family genealogy searches proved to be a meaningful avocation.
With Wendell, Dottie enjoyed many travels and adventures throughout the United States and Canadian Maritimes, Europe, Windjammer cruises in the Caribbean and Maine as well as a tour of Australia/New Zealand.
Dorothy and Wendell moved to Maine in late 2007 to be closer to their three remaining children and families. It was one of the best decisions of their lives. Their retirement community, Granite Hill Estates, was a wonderful “new home” and they took an active part in many programs.
Dottie is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jack and Philip, son Gary, daughter-in-law Cal, and husband Wendell.
Her heart’s desire was to marry and have children and God blessed her with a loving husband and family. Dorothy is survived by her dear children in Maine, Tim (Maggie) Davis of Vienna, Glen (Lynn Foley) Davisof Falmouth, Peggy (John) Barnes of Readfield, and her daughter-in law, Chrystie Davis; as well as much loved grandchildren Sara, Casey, Allyson, Kyle, Emily, Tim, Will, Ben, and Nick; and nine great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service held on Friday, Dec. 12, 10 a.m. at Granite Hill Estates in Hallowell.
In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be made to:
Granite Hill Estates Retirement Community Philanthropic Fund or:
Green Street United Methodist Church
Augusta, Maine
