Adrianna Smith matched her season high and led all scorers with 26 points, but the UMaine women’s basketball team dropped a 69-56 decision to Rhode Island on Sunday in Orono.

The Black Bears (3-7) battled back from a seven-point deficit to tie the game at 51 on a soft hook shot from Smith with 8 minutes to play. The Rams, however, outscored Maine 18-5 down the stretch to secure the victory.

Smith finished the afternoon 11 of 20 with two 3-pointers to go with six rebounds and three assists. Cheverus High graduate Maddie Fitzpatrick of Cumberland added a career-high 10 points in 26 minutes off the bench.

Brooklyn Gray and Vanessa Harris scored 18 points apiece for Rhode Island (8-2).
