All our lives, the Republican Party has bragged about being “the pro-business party.” And while Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush were president, that was true. But is it true now?
As recently reported by the Maine Sunday Telegram, small businesses in Maine are being suffocated by the surging costs of health care insurance. Mainers say (to paraphrase): “I’ve played by the rules all my life, and worked extremely hard to build this small Maine business. Now the cost of health care insurance is crippling us — possibly even forcing us to close.”
Amid that crisis, where is the Republican Party? Where is the “plan that will be far better than Obamacare” that the Republicans’ leader first promised in 2016, then again in 2019, and many times since?
