An Alna man died Thursday when his vehicle hit a snowbank, went airborne and struck another vehicle before landing on its roof in a river, according to police.
The crash, on the Pittston Road in Whitefield, was reported shortly before noon Thursday to Lincoln County Communications Center.
Chris L. Conary, 67, of Alna, was operating his silver 2006 Toyota Camry southbound on the Townhouse Road in Whitefield, according to a news release from Lt. Brendan W. Kane of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle traveled through the intersection with Pittston Road without stopping. The vehicle then struck a snowbank, causing the vehicle to go airborne.
The Camry then struck an unoccupied parked vehicle before flipping onto its roof in the adjacent river. The river was approximately 5 feet deep at this location. Firefighters were unable to extract Conary.
Conary, who was alone in the car, was wearing his seatbelt, the release said. The driver’s airbag did deploy.
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner is assisting in the investigation to determine cause of death and whether Conary had a medical event that caused the collision.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies were assisted by Whitefield Fire & Delta Ambulance. If any motorists witnessed the event, they are asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office and ask for Deputy Jeffery Rogers, the primary investigator.
