Joyce Caverly
WINTHROP – It is with great sadness that we say a final goodbye to the last matriarch of the family, Joyce Caverly, who passed away on Dec. 7, 2025, at the age of 89. She is now reunited with the love of her life, her husband of 47 years, John Caverly, who passed away in 2017.
Born on Nov. 21,1936, in West Gardiner, Joyce was the youngest of seven children of Gladys (Horne) Carr and Dexter Carr. She spent her life in the Winthrop area, graduating from Winthrop High School and later working for many years at Carlton Woolen Mills and The Charcoal House.
Joyce married John on Aug. 14, 1969, and together they made their home on Metcalf Road in Winthrop, where they lived for the rest of their lives. A devoted wife, she always had the table set with a warm meal waiting for John when he returned home from long days on the road. They loved spending time together, whether dancing to country music at the Readfield Lions Club or taking their annual drive for frozen custard at Hodgman’s in New Gloucester. For years, they traveled south to visit family and friends, with Joyce faithfully keeping detailed notebooks of each trip, documenting miles driven, gas used, places they stayed, and the memories they made.
Joyce was a gifted seamstress who sewed lovingly for her family and also ran a small sewing business for local residents. She was a devoted caretaker for those she loved, including her mother, her mother-in-law, and her cherished grandchildren. Family meant everything to her. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
Joyce is survived by her son Steve Tapley and his wife Marcia of Derry, New Hampshire, her daughter Margaret Plummer and her husband Fon of Gardiner, and her four grandchildren: Ryan Tapley of Biddeford, Megan Tapley Scott of Sarasota, Florida, Joe Coleman of Gardiner, and John Coleman of Yulee, Florida. She also leaves behind five great-grandchildren, along with extended family and friends.
There will be no public visiting hours or funeral at this time. A graveside service will be held in the spring.
Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where memories, photos and videos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of our funeral home website at http://www.khrfuneralhomes.com.
