Some school districts on Maine’s Midcoast said they will dismiss students early on Friday, citing the predicted rain and high winds that can make it difficult to drive high-profile vehicles like school buses.
Regional School Unit 13 will release middle and high school students at 11 a.m. Friday and elementary school students at noon, the district said in a post on social media Thursday, citing the forecast for wind gusts of up to 60 mph.
“This will most likely result in power outages, falling tree limbs and trees, and will make driving very difficult for high-profile vehicles like buses,” the district said in its post.
An RSU 13 student was fatally struck by a school bus last month. The parents of that student hired a law firm this week. And another student was struck and killed by a school bus in Standish this week.
The Five Town Community School District, which serves Camden and Rockport,had a statement on its website Thursday announcing that Camden Hills Regional High School and Camden Rockport Middle School students are to be dismissed at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, with Camden Rockport Elementary School being dismissed at 11:30 a.m.
Lincolnville Central School will also dismiss students at 11:30 a.m., the school said in a social media post.
On Thursday, the National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for coastal Maine on Friday.
“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” the warning states. “Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Damaging winds will down trees and power lines along with tree branches. The power outage threat is significant. Travel will be difficult due to wind gusts and debris on roadways.”
The weather service office in Gray is forecasting 20-30 mph winds, with gusts of 40-50 mph along Maine’s southern coastline on Friday and up to 60 mph in the Midcoast.
Along with the wind, high temperatures in the 50s are expected in much of Maine on Friday, with temperatures warmest along the coast. About an inch of rain is expected across a large swath of the state.
