Mick Madden’s season was defined by consistency. And consistency led to excellence.

The Cheverus senior averaged a 36 over nine holes during the regular season, then won the Class A individual title and led the Stags to the team championship.

“That was the big jump for me this year: more consistency, less stray shots off the tee,” Madden said. “Just kind of focused and really having a game plan every time I go out there … what I’m going to hit off every tee; I plan for that, what yardage I want to hit to. That’s been the biggest thing.”

That steadiness and success makes Madden the 2025 Varsity Maine Boys Golfer of the year.

Madden was particularly consistent in his wedge play, which gave him more birdie chances and improved his ability to recover when he did hit stray shots.

“His distance control was better,” Cheverus coach Billy Goodman said. “I think the ball flight was a little lower to allow that. We worked on it constantly. He’s a very hard worker. And it just allowed him to get lower scores. … One day he shot, what was it, 30, 31 in practice — I think, yeah, he shot like 4- or 5-under in practice.”

Madden’s consistency carried over to the 18-hole postseason tournaments at Natanis Golf Club’s Tomahawk course. First, he shot a 1-over 73 to take third place at the SMAA qualifier. He followed that with another 73 at the state championship to secure the individual title.

Madden again shot a 73 at the New England championship, where he tied for 10th.

Even when the ball wasn’t rolling in, Madden stayed focused and in the moment throughout the postseason. He emphasized the importance of a resilient mindset to his teammates after their SMAA championship win.

“So the team felt great,” Madden said. “I tried to tell them not to get too far ahead of ourselves.
And then for me, going into it, it was basically just kind of trying to do the same thing.”

Goodman said Madden was a leader all four of his years on the Cheverus golf team.

“He’s always been, ever since he started as a freshman, worried about the team, how we’re doing,” Goodman said. “He’s been a captain for three years for me. So he’s always had the ability to help kids, give a little lesson here and there to the kids, help them with the mental part, the physical part of golf, and he’s just always helping.”

The Stags won the Class A championship by 13 strokes, a victory that was especially sweet after they finished second in 2024. Three of the team’s top six from 2024 needed to be replaced, but Madden’s improvement and the emergence of other players, including freshman Sam Sirois, who tied for second at the state tournament, elevated Cheverus to its first state title since 2005.

“I really wanted the team to win,” Madden said. “Of course, I wanted to win a state championship, but the team aspect of it all was kind of what I was really focused on with the players, making sure we put in a lot of hard work, obviously, for the past few months, even in the summer.”

Madden will continue his golf career at Siena University, an NCAA Division I school in Loudonville, New York. He’s planning on studying criminal justice.

“The main thing was I love the coach,” Madden said. “Obviously, Coach (Steven) Jensen is there. The school, I loved. I was kind of looking for a little smaller size; the golf course is really close by, the facilities are really nice, and it’s not too far away from home. It’s only like four and a half hours, so I can still come back to Maine if I need to.”
