Maine State Police are investigating a murder-suicide on Mount Desert Island after the bodies of a husband and wife were discovered Tuesday morning.
Southwest Harbor Police responded to the scene near Big Rocks Road in Tremont just before 9 a.m. after a caller to 911 reported the discovery of two deceased adults. Tremont is located south of Acadia National Park.
State police identified the couple Friday as 78-year-old Jyoti Hawley and 75-year-old William Hawley, both of Tremont.
They both died of gunshot wounds, with autopsy results showing that Jyoti Hawley died by homicide and William Hawley died by suicide, according to state police.
Maine State Police have “identified all involved parties” and said there are no ongoing public safety concerns.
William Hawley was a composer whose work was performed globally, according to his website, which describes him as a longtime New York resident who later moved to coastal Maine with his wife.
State police are investigating the deaths in coordination with Southwest Harbor police. Police are asking anyone with information related to the case to call the Major Crimes Unit at 207-973-3700, ext. 9, and ask to speak with Detective Dana Austin.
