A fire Friday destroyed a Pittsfield home and left two dogs dead, the town’s fire chief said.

Firefighters were called to 693 Canaan Road around 7:30 a.m. and arrived on scene to find flames showing over the edge of the roof, Chief Bernard Williams of the Pittsfield Fire Department said Friday afternoon.

Canaan Road is also known as U.S. Route 2; the home is about a mile from the Canaan town line and Sibley Pond.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and then did overhaul work, Williams said.

Nobody appeared to be living at the home, which is a single-wide mobile home, but two dogs were inside and are believed to have died before firefighters arrived, the chief said.

The home, which Williams described as an older structure, was a total loss.

The Office of State Fire Marshal was investigating the cause, Williams said, adding that the investigation is also looking at why the dogs were at the home when it appeared no people lived there.

The fire marshal’s office determined the fire originated in the ceiling area of the kitchen.

“Based on the information currently available, the fire is not considered suspicious,” the fire marshal’s office said in a statement. “Fire investigators must complete additional interviews before making a final determination regarding the cause of the fire.”

A neighbor had been caring for the dogs on a daily basis, the office said.

Firefighters from Canaan, Detroit, Hartland, Newport and St. Albans assisted Pittsfield’s department, Williams said. The Pittsfield Police Department also helped on scene.

Frigid temperatures in the single digits Friday morning had no major effect on firefighting operations, Williams said.

The last crews cleared shortly after 10 a.m., when they were called to a rollover crash on Interstate 95, Williams said.
