Jeannette A. Scates

PALERMO – Jeannette A. Scates, 91, passed away on Dec. 22, 2025, and was reunited with her beloved husband John in time for their 75th anniversary.

She was born July 16, 1934, a daughter of William and Dorothy (Choate) Wood. Jeannette grew up in Hostile Valley of Palermo and attended Erskine Academy, later earning her diploma from Cony High School. On Dec. 23, 1950, she married John W. Scates and the two made their home in Palermo, Maine and East Hartford, Conn.

Jeannette enjoyed gardening and camping in Lamoine with her husband. She was a true historian for the town of Palermo and was instrumental with the Palermo Historical Society. In addition, she and John both enjoyed participating with the Windsor Historical Society during the Windsor Fair. She faithfully attended Palermo Christian Church and was devoted to the fellowship and well-being to the church community.

Jeannette will be remembered for her dedication to her beloved husband John and their family, fierce independence, and love for her community.

She was predeceased by her husband John; siblings, Harry Wood and his wife Mildred, Allen Wood, and Rachel Sheaff and her husband Elmer; nephew Gary Sheaff and a niece Gail Horak.

Jeannette is lovingly survived by her children, Kerry Scates and his wife Deborah, Rudy Scates, Linda Vigue and her husband Tom, and Dennis Scates and his wife Tracy; grandchildren, Derek Scates and wife Liz, Jennie Williams and husband Steve, Andrew Scates and wife Renee, Sarah Finley and husband Steven, Brian Vigue, Cassie Flood and husband Andrew, and Shyler Scates and wife Grace Ann; seven great grandchildren, Katherine Williams, Steven Williams, Victoria Williams, Remi Finley, Finley Scates, Sawyer Scates, and Maxwell Flood; a sister-in-law, Gloria Wood; and several nieces and nephews.

All are welcome to attend a celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at the Palermo Christian Church, 322 Branch Mills Rd., Palermo, ME 04354. A private graveside service will be held in the spring of 2026 at East Palermo Cemetery in Palermo.
