I had the opportunity to dance (Zumba!) to the song “Auld Lang Syne” today, the very first day of 2026. The words are hundreds of years old, penned by Robert Burns, a Scottish poet who lived in the 18th century. They strike me as particularly meaningful during this divisive time in the history of our country. The poignant words are: “We’ll take a cup o’ kindness dear (or yet), for auld lang syne.”

OK, let’s start a major kindness movement — this is the year! There are many good quotes about being kind (and I love them all). My favorite perhaps was written by the Dalai Lama: “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.”

If we notice someone being unkind in word or deed (and feel safe doing so — sorry I have to say that!), we could remind them in a gentle way that what they did was unkind, and what we need in this world is the opposite (e.g., respect, empathy). We all need to be reminded to behave well from time to time. Imagine how this movement could spread, not only within our own communities but to our lofty politicians as well.
