I don’t think we should so much be focusing on how evil Nicolás Maduro is/was as much as we should be looking at the precedent President Trump’s action in Venezuela sets.
Given the administration’s reasoning, what is now to stop China from invading Taiwan? Taiwan is a heck of a lot closer to China than Venezuela is to the U.S. and China can have its own “Donroe Doctrine.” All it needs to do is “claim” Taiwan is smuggling drugs or any excuse it can think of. It apparently does not need any proof.
Any guesses as to what Trump will do if China does invade Taiwan? My guess is … nothing. Trump will only attack weak countries that he can make some money from.
