President Trump knows no bounds. He brazenly used the U.S. military to bomb Venezuela and kidnap its president. Admittedly, Nicolás Maduro was an illegitimate president, having used force to overturn an election that was legitimately won by the opposition. But Trump has no legal or moral right to take military action, so how could he possibly justify it? We should ask our very own Sen. Collins.
Recently, Collins and all but two of her Republican colleagues voted against a Senate bill that would have required that any action against Venezuela require congressional approval. How many times do we have to witness her lack of courage in the Senate? Her unwillingness to stand up against Trump when it really matters.
Trump was quick to brag about the success of the military operation, saying “we will now run the country” as he looked over his shoulder at Pete Hegseth and Marco Rubio, his chief henchmen. Is his intent to restore democracy? Hardly. It is to control Venezuela’s oil industry, and pump millions of barrels of oil that the U.S. doesn’t need and that will hugely contribute to climate change.
And one more thing. Trump has just given a green light to autocrats around the world to overun their neighbors. So much for saving Taiwan. Goodbye to any hope of kicking Putin out of Ukraine.
We must do what we can to stop our president. Go to protests, call our congressional delegation, speak out on social media. And vote for anyone but Sen. Collins.
