Matt DeMelis and Ryan Miotto scored in the shootout after Worcester gave up a tying goal late in regulation, lifting the Railers to a 3-2 win over the Maine Mariners in an ECHL game Friday night at Cross Insurance Arena.
The Mariners extended their points streak to five games by forcing overtime on a goal by Antonio Venuto with 2:31 remaining in regulation. Maine then had numerous good scoring chances during the 7-minute extra session but was denied by Worcester goalie Tristan Lennox, who finished with 37 saves through regulation and overtime. Lennox also made two stops in the shootout after Brooklyn Kalmikov was successful on Maine’s first attempt.
Andrew Nielsen put the Mariners ahead 4:58 into the game, and the lead stood until early in the third period, when Worcester’s Anthony Callin scored a short-handed goal and a power-play goal in a three-minute span.
Mariners goalie Luke Cavallin made 22 saves.
