Katherine “Kay” A. (Brown) Gilman
READFIELD / AUGUSTA – Katherine “Kay” A. (Brown) Gilman, 92, passed away peacefully at her home at The Inn at City Hall Jan. 9, 2026. Kay was born in Palmyra on July 19, 1933, the daughter of William and Louise (Hewett) Brown.
Kay grew up in Winthrop and graduated from Winthrop High School, where she played basketball, musical instruments, glee club, prom and winter carnival queen. She was employed at McNamara’s Restaurant in Winthrop.
Mom was “The Best” a special wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and Christian who will be greatly missed. Mom was a hard worker and enjoyed Farming with Dad and being a homemaker. You would often catch her singing, yodeling or whistling, always having a big smile, a laugh, and a hoot. She loved to cook for everyone and made the best biscuits ever, like Grammy Brown. Mom also enjoyed reading the bible, puzzles, word search, playing cards and games with family and friends (often the winner). Mom was always an early bird and in later years went to bed with the chickens (dusk).
Kay loved her most recent home at The Inn at City Hall, where she made many friends. The family would like to thank all the special people who work at The Inn, Dr. Bartol from Family Focused Healthcare, Andwell Hospice, and Roberts Funeral Home for their loving care.
Kay was predeceased by her husband, Pete Gilman in 2011; a son, Sonny Gilman; a grandson, Eric Rich; brothers Ralph, Billy, and Norman Brown, sisters Althea Breton and Phyllis Murch.
She is survived by three daughters, Norma Gilman of Vassalboro, Barbara Rich of Augusta, Josie Gilman of Gardiner, daughter-in-law, Rebecca Gilman of Windsor; 10 special grandchildren; and 17 adored great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Brown of Sidney, Beverly Brown of Litchfield, Lillian “Sis” Wight of Jay, Jo and husband Soup Paige of Rochester N.H., and a special thanks to mom’s neighbor and sister-in-law, Jean and husband Steve Clark of Readfield; many nieces, nephews; cousins; and friends, including longtime friend, Sandy.
At Kay’s request there will be no visitation or funeral, a graveside service will be held in the spring at Readfield Corner Cemetery on Church Road in Readfield.
