Maine State Police are investigating the death of a 3-month-old girl in Orrington on Friday and have arrested the baby’s father.

The Penobscot Regional Communication Center received a 911 call on Friday morning that 12-week-old Lyla Samuels was unresponsive at her home in Orrington. The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home, and the baby was transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Maine State Police’s major crimes unit was called in to investigate.

The baby’s father, Shawn Samuels, 24, of Orrington, was arrested by state police Saturday on one count of domestic violence aggravated assault and two counts of bail violations.

Detectives learned Sunday that the infant had died. An autopsy was conducted the following day; the cause of death is tentative pending final testing. The infant’s death was ruled a homicide.

Shawn Samuels was subsequently arrested on a charge of murder at the Penobscot County Jail, where he remains in custody. Samuel will make an initial court appearance at the Penobscot County Judicial Center in Bangor via Zoom on Wednesday.

Anyone with relevant information is asked to call 207-973-3700 ext. 9 and ask for Detective Dana Austin.
