I am writing to strongly advocate for keeping the NAAB-accredited architecture program at the University of Maine at Augusta intact in its current location at Handley Hall.

I have had the pleasure of supporting this program as a design critic for early studio courses as well as thesis presentations. Through this experience, I have consistently seen a rigorous, well-structured program with enthusiastic students producing work of exceptional quality. The expectations are high, the instruction is strong, and the students are deeply engaged in learning how to design responsibly and thoughtfully within Maine’s unique cultural, environmental and economic context.

This program does more than educate future architects — it helps make Maine stronger and more attractive. It supports our design and construction community by training professionals who are invested in the state and prepared to contribute meaningfully to its built environment. Its presence at Handley Hall also invigorates Augusta’s town center, bringing creativity, daily activity and public engagement downtown.

At a time when Maine is working to attract and retain young talent, strengthen local economies and revitalize our communities, it is essential to protect programs that are already succeeding. The architecture program at UMA is one of them, and it belongs where it is.
