Marie Louise Laverdiere
AUGUSTA – Marie Louise Laverdiere, 88, of Augusta, passed away Jan. 20, 2026, at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta, surrounded by the love of her children. Born on Aug. 17, 1937, in Livermore Falls, she was the daughter of Frank and Genevieve (Guerin) Tardif.
Marie began her nursing career in 1958 after graduating from Mercy Hospital in Portland. She dedicated 25 years to serving our nation’s veterans as a Registered Nurse at Togus, a role that perfectly suited her compassionate nature.
On Nov. 24, 1960, she married Joseph Laverdiere. Together, they built a life in Augusta centered on faith and family. Marie’s primary priority was providing her seven children with a solid foundation. To ensure they were always cared for by a parent, she worked evening shifts at the hospital, opposite of her husband’s teaching schedule, for many years—a testament of her selfless dedication to her family.
Her heart for her children was especially evident in the care and support she provided to her daughter, Carmen. Marie’s unwavering devotion and patience were a central part of her life until Carmen’s passing in 1995.
In Marie’s later years, she enjoyed giving back to her community. As a Eucharistic Minister and a lay person for the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, she brought comfort to those in local nursing homes. She also spent many years volunteering at the St. Paul Center’s kitchen for special functions. Marie’s kind nature and strong faith were a source of comfort to all who knew her.
Marie was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; and her daughter, Carmen.
Marie is survived by her six children, Celeste and Rey Vigue of Merritt Island, Fla., Tom Laverdiere and his partner, Bethany Gates of Manchester, Stephanie Laverdiere of Boston, Mass., Jim and Wendy Laverdiere of South Portland, Laurie Laverdiere and her partner Jason Mayberry of Portland, Ore. and Karen and Josh Ferry of South Portland. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Ryan, Sara, Raelynn, Simone, Danielle, Luke, Amarjot, Katelyn, and Cameron; and four great-grandchildren, Isabella, Natalia, Juliana, and Lilly; as well as many friends who will miss her.
Relatives and friends may visit on Friday, Feb. 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 41 Western Ave., Augusta, on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Livermore, in the spring.
The family expresses their sincere gratitude to the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta and MaineGeneral Medical Center for their dedication and support.
