Messalonskee is back in the top 2 of the Varsity Maine boys hockey poll. The Eagles were No. 1 in the first poll and ranked second in the next. They dropped to third in the third poll, then dropped out of the rankings for a week before returning in a tie for third last week.
Messalonskee has made a strong case for being the state’s No. 2 squad. The top team in the Class B North Heal standings has wins over three Class A programs, all of whom are ranked in this week’s poll: The Eagles are the only team to beat No. 1 Thornton Academy, and they defeated Cheverus/Yarmouth, which was ranked second three weeks in a row, and Scarborough, which joins the rankings at No. 5 this week. All three victories were by multiple goals.
Messalonskee’s rise to second is part of a total shakeup behind Thornton, which is the unanimous No. 1 for the fourth consecutive poll. That includes the Lewiston co-op returning to the rankings after a one-week absence, helped by a 7-4 win over rival Edward Little, which was tied for third last week.
The Varsity Maine boys hockey poll is based on games played before Jan. 27, 2026. The top five teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
