Geraldine “Gerry” (MacBurnie) Roley
HALLOWELL – Geraldine (MacBurnie) Roley passed away peacefully on Jan. 18, 2026 in Hallowell.
“Gerry” was born in Farmington on Oct. 24, 1923, the daughter of Harry and Bernice (Bailey) MacBurnie. She attended Cony High School and graduated in 1941. She continued her education at the University of Maine, earning her degree in 1945. She was salutatorian of both her high school and college classes.
While at UMaine she met the love of her life Ray D. “Red” Roley. He, like so many of the class of ’44, went into the service for World War II before graduating. Gerry worked for the State of Maine after she graduated in 1945, and she and Red were married in 1946 when he returned from Europe.
Twins Richard and Roger were born while Red finished school. The first job was in New Jersey with relocations to Texas, Kentucky and back to Texas. There were frequent trips to Maine to visit Gerry’s parents. They retired in Texas with a place in Manchester for the summers. Red passed away in 2002 and Gerry maintained both locations before moving back to Maine full time in 2020.
An active and social person throughout her life, Gerry belonged to various organizations, often taking a leadership role. She also was an active volunteer at her church and the local library. Geraldine remained a member of the Augusta Country Club well into her 90s, enjoying the friendships and community she found there. Later in life she received excellent care at Maine General Hospital, Maine Veterans Home in Augusta and the Martha Ballard Assisted Living unit at Granite Hill Estates.
Family was very important to her and she had great affection for her parents and grandparents, an attribute she passed on to her sons.
She was predeceased by her husband; and her parents.
Geraldine is survived by her sons Richard (Rae Anne) and Roger (Marilyne); grandchildren Jennifer (David) Mullaly and Kimberly Roley; and great-grandchildren Kate Mullaly and Bryant Mullaly, who will cherish her memory and the legacy of a long life well lived.
