On Jan. 24, I received a letter from a friend in Minneapolis, part of which I would like to share — because it is really a message for all of us here in Maine.
He wrote:
“Hearing that ICE was surging into Maine in the ridiculously named Operation Catch of the Day, I felt a strong impulse to connect with you in this crucial moment in American history. Here in Minneapolis we are now in almost the third month of the occupation of our beautiful city from ICE, CBP and DHS.
“The stories are even more horrifying than the mainstream media has portrayed. These creeps are everywhere. We have entire segments of our immigrant population who are afraid to leave their house for fear of being detained. In the face of this terror, the people of Minnesota are standing up for our democratic ideals. I feel as if we are on the front lines and it is a tough fight. But 50,000 people marched today in minus 30-degree windchill cold to protest what’s been going on here.”
I feel this is a heartening message that we need to hear.
