Phillip “Phil” S. Snowden

SAVUSAVU, FIJI ISLANDS – Phillip “Phil” S. Snowden, passed away in his home and on his own terms, one year ago, on Jan. 30, 2025. His home was his castle on top of his beautiful Fijian Hill.

Born in August of 1948 on a Kentucky military base, he was the second child of Paul Sydney Snowden Lt. USAF and Verneal Hicks Snowden Sgt. US Army, both proud WW2 Veterans. His kindness and generosity were truly unparalleled. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for someone in need, including saving the lives of two women trapped in a burning car as a teenager. An act of courage for which he received the Carnegie Medal for Heroism at age 15. An incredible athlete, Phil was an exceptional athlete and student, making whatever he did look easy!

After graduating from college, he was scouted by the NFL, but chose instead to travel through Europe. Thus beginning a lifelong love of exploration and adventure! He was the smartest, worldliest, and most interesting man you’d ever meet. He’d happily tell you himself within five minutes! Dad loved life. From his early days in California, raising hell with his friends, and using his charm to get them all out of a jam, to his time travelling the country in a van to his days in Maine, where he taught us how to throw the best pig roast with friends from all over. He’d always bring a big personality with humor, love, and a big dose of sarcasm. He truly loved all in his orbit.

A true renaissance man, Phil built two of his own homes from the ground up. The first home was built in Smithfield, Maine, with his friend and father-in-law, Chic Schiraldi. In 2005, Phil was able to retire. He embraced his freedom fully, traveling the world before ultimately settling in the Fiji Islands. He met wife Cilia on his new island home, whom he loved very much. He cherished how well Cilia took care of him.

Phil was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Verneal Snowden; his longtime partner Elizabeth Redstone; and too many friends and family to list.

He is survived by his sister, Paula Snowden, whom he always looked up to. He is also survived by his daughter, Regina Snowden, partner Amanda, and Regina’s children, Lilac and Mya, whom he adored and loved deeply. He is also survived by his stepson, Thor Redstone, and his family, as well as by his best friends, Susan Berbower and family, Randy Fruechting (Beverly) and family.

Phil’s life was big and gregarious—full of courage, curiosity, laughter, and love— just as he was.

There will be no service. He has been laid to rest in the traditional Fijian style, overlooking the Bay.

In honor and remembrance of Dad, do something kind for a stranger, laugh too loudly, and tell the ones that you love how special and wonderful they are.
