A letter published Feb. 3 urged caution about Dr. Nirav Shah’s gubernatorial run, citing perceived shortcomings in his candidacy. Performing due diligence is the responsibility of every voter and, had the author done so, she could have avoided presenting patently incorrect statements. With more than 10 years of experience as an executive in government, Dr. Shah’s qualifications clearly exceed “a career in policy analysis.”
In addition to his public health experience, Dr. Shah possesses degrees in law and economics — practicing law for several years before turning to public service. While principal deputy director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has a larger budget than the state of Maine and as many employees, he developed invaluable experience with the legislative process and the dynamics of the federal government. The list goes on. I urge everyone to take the time to acquaint themselves with his background and accomplishments.
Having spent most of my career in public administration, including almost 10 years as Sagadahoc County’s administrator, with direct knowledge of the skills and attributes needed to be effective on a state and local level, I am confident Dr. Shah is uniquely and unquestionably qualified for success as Maine’s next governor. As the race continues, Mainers should do the work necessary to inform themselves rather than simply listening to talking points. And, I challenge candidates from all parties to hold themselves to the same level of transparency and accountability as Dr. Shah does in every town hall his campaign hosts.
