A dominant third quarter boosted seventh-seeded Dirigo to a 49-37 win over 10th-seeded Winslow in a Class C South boys basketball preliminary-round game Wednesday night in Dixfield.
Dirigo (12-7) trailed 13-6 after one quarter and 24-17 at halftime before outscoring Winslow 17-2 in the third to seize control.
Dirigo’s Brady Philbrick topped all scorers with 18 points. He hit five 3-pointers, including four in the second half, and made 3 of 4 foul shots. Owen Smith added 12 points and Nolan Houghton scored 10 for the Cougars, who advance to face No. 2 Hall-Dale in the quarterfinals Monday at the Augusta Civic Center.
Carter Calvo led Winslow (8-11) with 15 points, and Noah Harding had 12.
BOYS HOCKEY
BANGOR CO-OP 8, LEWISTON CO-OP 1: Chase Caron and Zac Cota each scored twice as Bangor/Brewer/Skowhegan/Narraguagus (9-6-1) knocked off Lewiston/Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse (11-4-1) at Sawyer Arena in Bangor.
Philip Moscone added a goal and three assists, and Eddie Goff, Baylon Cram and Raphia Mattsen also found the back of the net.
Lawson Mayer scored for the Blue Devils, who are ranked second in the most recent Varsity Maine poll.
