I read Margaret Hight’s opinion letter from the Jan. 25 paper (“Mainers should step back and let ICE agents do their job“). She says, “Somalians who aren’t doing anything wrong should also have nothing to worry about.” This is either a naive statement or a willful disregard of the facts.
Somalians, along with other lawful immigrants, are being detained, pulled out of cars and taken from their homes — even if they have proof that they are here legally. Then, they are taken away to places like Texas, and because they have done nothing wrong, are then released and somehow have to make their way back home, perhaps thousands of miles away in the United States.
Doing nothing wrong does not protect us from unlawful search and seizure by ICE agents, or should I say storm troopers.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
