A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and killed Wednesday on U.S. Route 202 in Winthrop, police said.

“As of this time the pedestrian has not been positively identified, and we are relying on the Medical Examiners Office to positively identify the body before we can notify next of kin,” Winthrop police Chief Paul Ferland said in a news release.

Winthrop police, fire and ambulance crews responded just before 6 p.m. to the car-pedestrian crash in the area of Winthrop Veterinary Hospital at 1942 U.S. Route 202, according to the release.

The incident occurred about 1 1/2 miles east of the Hannaford at 399 Main St., just off Route 202.

The man was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, where he died from his injuries, the release says.

Police said a black 2015 Dodge pickup truck driven by Merton Ward, 51, of Augusta, was heading east on U.S. Route 202 when it struck the man. It was unclear Thursday what circumstances led to the crash.

Route 202 was shut down for about 3 1/2 hours.

“The crash is currently under investigation at this time and is being reconstructed by
Maine State Police,” the release says. “The Monmouth Police Department, and Maine State Police are assisting with the investigation, and the Kennebec-Somerset District Attorney’s Office has
been notified.”

Police asked that anyone with information about the crash call Winthrop police at 207-377-7226 and contact Lt. Josh Hammond.
