PORTLAND — A low seed after going 11-7 in the regular season didn’t hurt the confidence of the Scarborough boys basketball team, even going into a matchup with an opponent seeking its third straight state championship.
“I said ‘No one out here is going to think we’re going to win this game. The only thing that matters is the people in the locker room,'” senior guard Carter Blanche said. “We all believed coming into this game.”
Believed, and then delivered. No. 8 Scarborough stunned the state Saturday night, shocking No. 1 Windham, 66-62 in overtime, in a Class A South quarterfinal at the Portland Expo.
Layton Garriepy led the upset effort with 19 points, while Adam Fitzgerald scored 16 and E.J. Herrick had 11.
Colin Janvrin scored 18 points, AJ Moody finished with 15 and Tyrie James tallied 11 for Windham (16-3).
“They didn’t want their season to end,” said Scarborough coach Phil Conley, who credited his eight seniors with keeping the team poised. “They had a little bit extra in them tonight.”
The game followed the upset formula perfectly. Scarborough (13-7) took the lead midway through the first quarter, then built on it by shooting 89% in the third quarter. Off-balance 3-pointers fell. Players finished through fouls. Everyone wearing a red jersey defended relentlessly, keeping Windham stars Moody and James below their typical output.
Janvrin came up big, but Scarborough had a counter for that, too, as Garriepy had 16 points through three quarters.
“What he did tonight as our (center) who’s 6-2, guarding a really good player and then just finishing around the rim, was huge,” Conley said.
Windham, though, rallied in the second half and took a 59-57 lead on two James free throws with 1:25 to play. But Herrick patiently waited for Windham defenders to clear before putting in a tying layup with 44 seconds left, and after a Fitzgerald steal, the upset bid went to overtime.
“They went on that run, we came in together on a free throw and we told ourselves we’re not going home tonight,” Fitzgerald said.
A team that had trouble closing out wins during the season finished off the champs in overtime. Garriepy made a basket, and after Windham’s Landon Wyman hit one of two free throws, Blanche went to the line for a pair and sank both with 2:09 to go.
Windham missed shots on its next two possessions, then turned the ball over with 30 seconds to go. Carter Ryan went to the line, hit both free throws, and moments later the stunner was complete.
“We’ve all been waiting for this game. We circled it in our schedules, we were so excited for it,” Garriepy said. “I’ve been playing this game since I was a kid. I’ve been looking for this moment, and it was great.”
