LEWISTON โ One team had to fight to the finish. The other held down the lead for most of the afternoon.
In a slugfest that came down to the final events, the Greely boys repeated as Class B indoor track champion Monday at Bates College. The Rangers finished with 65 points, runner-up Freeport had 55 and third-place York scored 55.33.
โIt feels great, considering we were barely seeded to be in the fight,โ said Greely coach David Dowling. โWe got just enough to be at the top. We tell the kids, โExceed your seeds,โ because you never know whatโs going to happen.โ
Freeport won the girls championship with 64 points, followed by runner-up Yarmouth (51) and defending champion Greely, which finished third with 45. Junior Emma Graham picked up an individual title for the Falcons, winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.21, holding off Haley Rose (1:00.67) of Bucksport and Sovie Rau (1:00.88) of Erskine Academy.
โComing off being second place last year, we were really trying to work for the win this year,โ Graham said. โWe were super happy and proud of our work. (Last year) really motivated us because the difference (to then champion Greely) was so little.โ
โItโs amazing,โ said Freeport coach Ginger Ivanov. โThey worked hard all season, I couldnโt be more proud. All season โ I told them from the first practice โ they have the potential, they have the talent and they had the experience (to win). They could dig in and do this, and they didnโt prove me wrong.โ
Freeport, which led much of the day, also won the 3,200 relay (10:25.62) with the team of Stella Kryzak, Maddy York, Ada Shirley and Lilah Hall.
Greely secured the title with its final event, the 800 relay, with the team of Konnor Crocker, Holden Pierce, Connor Skillin and Jackson Walton. The group finished with a time of 1:35.42, holding off York (1:37.47) and Lake Region (1:37.57).
โWe all just came together at the end and did our thing,โ said Crocker, who also won the 200 (23.63), just holding off Jacob Eveleth Jr. of Fryeburg Academy (23.65). โWe were pretty confident going (into the relay). We were trying to go for the meet record but we didnโt have it, but thatโs all right.
โWe knew it was going to be harder (to win the team title), we lost a lot of seniors (from last year). We knew weโd have to work harder and fight for it.โ
Walton also picked up a victory for the Rangers in the long jump, with a leap of 20-5 1/2, just holding off Foxcroft Academyโs Conner Donahue (20-2.50).
โI was not predicted to do this but Iโm glad I was able to,โ said Walton, a sophomore. โFor most of the season Iโd been fighting Achilles tendinitis, and the last two meets I actually faulted. I didnโt come here prepared. When I heard 20 feet, 5 1/2 inches, I was just ecstatic.โ
The Freeport boys were led by senior distance runner Alex Gilbert, who won the mile (4:40.11), and finished second in the 800 (2:03.67) and 2-mile (10:18.89). Gilbertโs teammate, junior Ian Guzman, won the 800 (2:00.25).
The Yarmouth girls were led by junior Miah Jacobs, who won the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.28 seconds. The Clippers also won the 800 relay with the team of Jacobs, Ava Hoffman, Lilah Pernal and Abby Noble (1:49.70).
Old Town senior Elyannah Briggs set a state record in the high jump, hitting a mark of 5-6 1/5. The previous record was held by Yarmouthโs Emma Egan at 5-6 in 2016.
โIt feels so good, Iโve worked towards this (record) for so long,โ said Briggs. โAfter I got 5-6, itโs been my goal to get this record.
โI felt pretty good (coming into the meet), itโs been a while since Iโve been on this track. I just (decided) to use my regular shoes. I was really expecting to just do 5-4, I wasnโt expecting this at all. Itโs just pure joy, you just want to high-five everybody and scream, โI finally did it.'โ
Hassan Hobbi of Winslow picked up two victories, taking the 55 hurdles (8.11) and 400 (52.28).
