BELFAST — Mt. Blue High has been at the forefront of the boom of girls wrestling in Maine over the past half decade.

On Tuesday, the Cougars can now call themselves state champions.

Mt. Blue (93.5 points) won the team title at the girls wrestling state championship Tuesday at Belfast Area High School. Defending champion Massabesic (88.5) was the runner-up, and 2024 champion Noble (87) was third.

“It feels great,” said Mt. Blue coach Mike Hansen. “I was just telling our athletic director (Cyndi Pratt) that we’ve been working toward this for years. We’ve managed to always be (near) the top of the pack. Today, coming in here, I wasn’t sure if we had the power at the end. We’re always the bridesmaid, but never the bride. But today, everything came through.

“This is not only a next step for us, but it’s a next step for the whole state (for girls wrestling). We’re not just paving the road anymore. The road is in place, we have guardrails up and lines painted. The rest of the state is there, too.”

Brooklynn Webber (114 pounds) and Kaydn Hansen (132) won individual titles. Webber, a senior, won her third title and collected her 100th career victory. She beat Faith Almeida of Skowhegan by first-period pin to win the 114-pound championship.

“I’ve been at this since my freshman year, we’ve been runner-up (to the team title) for the past two years,” Webber said.

Hansen, a sophomore, won her second state crown, beating Kylie Biter of Oxford Hills by first-period pin.

“I was nervous, at first, because I wrestled (Biter) earlier in the season and she had me pretty much pinned,” Hansen said. “I just came back and beat her that time. I was nervous, but I had a good mental state and wrestled my hardest.”

Hannah Perro of Noble became the state’s first four-time girls champion, beating Mt. Blue’s Abigail Garland by third-period pin to claim the 100-pound title.

“It’s a milestone. It’s something that I’ve wanted to do since I’ve started wrestling,” Perro said. “I’m so happy to be able to have that accomplishment, with last year ending with (shoulder) surgery and everything, coming back from that was one of my biggest goals. I’m so happy I did it.”

Aside from hitting a state milestone, Perro becomes the second wrestler from Noble this year to nab a fourth state championships. Brady Ouellette was the program’s first wrestler to achieve that feat, on Saturday at the Class A championships in Augusta. Perro’s teammate, defending New England champion Delaney Frost, repeated as a state champion with a first-period pin over Lola Vance of Scarborough to win the 126-pound title.

Massabesic had three champions, with repeat crowns won by Neveah Grunhuvd (138) and Sophie Grunhuvd (145). Aesa Brock pinned Lilith Every-Blanchard of Erskine Academy in the first period in the 165-pound final.

Neveah Grunhuvd’s championship match was one of the best of the day, against Maxine Spencer of Erskine Academy. Down 6-2 after two periods, Spencer nearly pulled off a victory in the third period, but Grunhuvd held on for a 6-5 win.

Nokomis junior Ava McGinnis was named the Lisa Nowak Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament. McGinnis beat Zady Paige of Belfast by a 5-0 score for the 152-pound championship. It’s her second state title.

Sora Bukoski (107) of Penobscot County, Martina Gili Fernandez (120) and Izabella Bertocchi (185) of Maine Central Institute and Lily Soper (235) of Bucksport also took home titles. Fernandez and Soper are repeat state champions.

The event continues to grow in numbers, as 153 wrestlers competed Tuesday. That’s 48 more than last year (105) and 56 more than 2024 (97).
