Work continues on a $4.5 million fence project at the Blaine House in Augusta.

The project, which began last summer, will enhance the building’s security deterring unauthorized individuals while improving access for approved personnel.

The prominent security fence will surround the perimeter of the property along Chamberlain, Capitol and State streets. The structure is similar to the fencing already surrounding the State House across the street made of stone, masonry and metal. It replaces a wooden, white picket fence.

The project was prompted by a security study initiated in 2018 and is intended to improve security at the state-owned official residence of the governor, which also is the site of public events and tours.

Sharon Huntley, director of communications for the state Department of Administrative and Financial Services, said the new security fence and gates “will be more substantial and provide greater security than the previous wooden picket fence.”
