Mekhi Gray scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half, and Maine clinched a spot in the America East men’s basketball tournament by defeating New Hampshire 61-58 on Saturday in Durham, New Hampshire.
Logan Carey also finished with 16 points and Ace Flagg scored a career-high 15 for Maine (7-21, 5-8 America East), which halted a three-game losing streak. The Black Bears moved up to sixth place in the conference with three games remaining.
Maine trailed 58-55 with just over two minutes remaining, but Flagg tied the game with a three-point play. Gray put the Black Bears in front by sinking two free throws with 58 seconds left.
UNH (8-18, 4-9) turned the ball over on its next two possessions, but Gray missed two free throws and Carey made just 1 of 2 with a chance to clinch the win. New Hampshire’s Tyler Bike missed a long 3-pointer as time expired.
Bike led the Wildcats with 15 points. Belal El Shakery had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
