FALMOUTH — Over the course of her career on the Brunswick High girls hockey team, Solveig Ledwick established herself as one of the state’s best all-around players.

Tuesday night, she became the school’s first Becky Schaffer Award winner as the best senior girls hockey player in Maine. The award is named after former Yarmouth standout Becky Schaffer, who died in a hiking accident in 2011.

“That’s super cool … I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and my dad (Chris Ledwick), who’s my coach, and he has been for so long. It’s just such a team process, a team sport, it’s really for everybody.”

The Brunswick program came close in 2025 to having its first Schaffer winner.

“We thought we’d have one with Lisi Palmer last year, who I thought was deserving, but there was some other great competition last year,” Brunswick coach Chris Ledwick said. “… So proud as a coach and as a parent.”

Ledwick was the state’s leading goal scorer this season with 31 goals while adding nine assists as she helped the Dragons to the Northern Maine semifinals. She was a do-it-all player, skating at both forward and defense.

The other finalists were Cheverus co-op goalie Ellie Skolnekovich, Yarmouth/Freeport defender Adelaide Strout and Biddeford co-op forward Corinne Ramunno.

Chris Ledwick said his daughter is a driven person.

“She is a very self-motivated individual,” Ledwick said. “She pushes herself. She wants to play probably more than I do. She’s very driven, and she’s really developed her game on her own tremendously well.”

Solveig said she learned a lot of those traits from her father.

“I think it’s been great,” she said. “I grew up with him as my coach since learning to play, so it’s definitely a different experience that a lot of people don’t get, but I wouldn’t have traded it for anything.”

Ledwick plans to attend Bowdoin College and be around hockey in one form or another.

“I’m not committed, but you’ll definitely see me around the rinks,” Solveig said. “We’ll see whether it’s a club (team). We will see what happens.”

The award ceremony was a part of the Senior All-Star game festivities at Falmouth’s Family Ice Center. Solveig Ledwick helped lead the North to a 5-1 victory over the South, scoring twice, while Strout recorded a goal and an assist. Brunswick’s Gillian Countway and Yarmouth/Freeport’s Erin O’Connor also scored. Ramunno got the lone tally for the South.
