State police detectives Tuesday were continuing to investigate a Friday shooting in Norridgewock.

One man, meanwhile, who was at the scene of the reported shooting when sheriff’s deputies arrived, was held in jail over the weekend for violating bail conditions.

“Detectives are still working to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting,” said Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss in an email Tuesday.

She said the agency had no further details to share publicly.

On Friday, the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit — Central responded to the shooting on Dodlin Road at the request of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, Moss said previously.

The Sheriff’s Office had been called to a residence on Dodlin Road around 2:30 p.m. Friday for a reported medical emergency, according to an affidavit from Deputy Jacob Dever filed in court in Skowhegan. Initial reports to first responders indicated two men had been in a fight, and one shot the other.

Dever wrote in the affidavit he located Dustyn Merrill, 41, holding a towel around the head of Kodi Merrill, 40. The affidavit does not say if the two are related.

Medical personnel delivered aid to Kodi Merrill, whose injuries are not described in the affidavit, while deputies searched Dustyn Merrill. Police collected evidence in the area, including two firearms, the affidavit says.

Dever noted he observed Dustyn Merrill smelled strongly of alcohol, stumbled while walking and slurred his speech; bail conditions in other cases prohibited him from using or possessing alcohol. Dever arrested him for violation of condition of release.

While at Redington-Fariview General Hospital in Skowhegan for a medical evaluation of a hand injury, Dustyn Merrill “freely spoke about the day and without prompting nor questioning, admitted to consuming multiple shots of whiskey prior to the incident,” Dever wrote.

He was held without bail at the Somerset County Jail in Madison until a brief initial court appearance Tuesday held via videoconference at the Skowhegan District Court. Somerset County courts were closed Monday due to inclement weather, delaying the arraignment one day.

Dustyn Merrill, who has listed addresses in Anson and Waldoboro, pleaded not guilty to one misdemeanor count of violating condition of release.

District Court Judge Amy Dieterich ordered his bail set at $500 cash, per an agreement between defense lawyer-of-the-day Jonathan Handelman and Assistant District Attorney Sarah Gracie.

Bail conditions set Tuesday include that Dustyn Merrill is prohibited from possessing firearms, subject to random search and must comply with bail conditions in other pending cases. He is due back in court July 22 in Skowhegan for a dispositional conference.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Merrill remained in jail.

Moss, the state police spokesperson, confirmed that Dustyn Merrill was one of “many people” with whom investigators spoke during the investigation Friday.
