The Maine Department of Transportation will close Augusta’s Memorial Bridge to westbound traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, the department said in a news release.
Maine DOT workers plan to complete a routine inspection of the 1949 bridge, which spans 2,100 feet across the Kennebec River and serves as a major city landmark, connecting the city’s east side to downtown Augusta and the Maine State House. The department closed the westbound lane of the bridge earlier this month for two days for an initial round of inspections.
Drivers coming from Memorial Circle, the roundabout on the western side of the river, will be able to cross the bridge. Drivers coming from Cony Circle, the eastern side’s roundabout, should take Bridge Street to cross the river.
Pedestrians from each direction will still be able to cross the river using the northern side of the bridge.
No other roads will have limited access as a result of the inspection. Drivers and pedestrian should follow detour signs.
The inspection depends on weather, MDOT said in the release; closure details may change depending on conditions.
