PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A deadly shooting during a youth hockey game in Rhode Island last week has claimed a third victim: a grandfather whose daughter and grandson were also killed in the attack, authorities said.
Pawtucket police announced Wednesday evening that Gerald Dorgan, who had been in critical condition, had died from his injuries.
Dorgan’s daughter, Rhonda Dorgan, and grandson Aidan Dorgan were also killed in the shooting.
The accused shooter, identified by police as 56-year-old Robert Dorgan, was an employee at Bath Iron Works in Maine.
The shooter, who died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, was transgender and also went by the names Roberta Esposito and Roberta Dorgano, authorities said. Family, friends and officials have said Robert Dorgan’s pronouns were unclear.
Rhonda Dorgan was the shooter’s ex-wife, and Aidan Dorgan was the shooter’s adult son. Officials have said the shooter was specifically targeting family members.
Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien said Wednesday he was heartbroken that another person has died because of the shooting.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victim’s family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragic act of violence,” he said in a statement.
Maine authorities aided Rhode Island police in investigating the shooter. Maine State Police searched Robert Dorgan’s storage unit in Brunswick earlier this month and found firearms, ammunition and firearm accessories, according to Pawtucket police.
At the time of the shooting, Dorgan was working on the BIW’s cable crew, which is made up of more than 30 people who run cables throughout ships. Co-workers have described the shooter as a reserved person who was often harassed by others for being transgender.
Rhonda Dorgan’s mother, Linda Dorgan, and a family friend, Thomas Geruso, were also wounded in the attack.
Law enforcement have credited several people who intervened and quickly stopped the attack. At least three bystanders were able to contain the shooter in the middle of the stands as the crowd fled and ran around them.
