A Vassalboro man arrested Wednesday is accused of drug trafficking after he was found in possession of more than four pounds of cocaine, police said.

Maine State Police troopers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Edwin Lawrence, 24, just north of the West Gardiner toll station on Interstate 295 at about 8 p.m., Maine Drug Enforcement Agency Commander Lowell Woodman said in a news release.

As the troopers approached the vehicle, Woodman said, Lawrence accelerated. Troopers followed and deployed devices that deflated the tires on Lawrence’s vehicle. Woodman said Lawrence fled on foot, but was quickly captured with assistance from a Maine State Police K-9 unit.

Officers found 2 kilograms, or 4.4 pounds, of cocaine, and about $1,000 in suspected drug proceeds after a warranted search of Lawrence and his vehicle, Woodman said. Agents were informed that Lawrence was traveling to Maine with drugs before initiating the traffic stop, he said.

An additional search warrant executed by Maine State Police and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office on Lawrence’s Vassalboro home yielded no additional evidence — but Woodman said MDEA agents have been investigating the 44 Webber Pond Road residence for several months as a suspected drug trafficking hub.

Lawrence was charged with aggravated drug trafficking, eluding a police officer and refusing to submit to arrest. He is being held at Kennebec County Jail on $92,000 bail.

Additional arrests are expected in the case, Woodman said in the release.
