WATERVILLE — The Hampden Academy boys hockey team seemed to miss opportunities all night in a Class B North semifinal Friday against the Cony co-op.
But when Brody Miller got his chance in the second overtime, he didn’t miss.
Miller was able to knock a shot through the legs of Cony goaltender Ryan Bourque 23 seconds into the second overtime to lift the third-seeded Broncos to a 4-3 victory over the second-seeded Rams at Colby College.
Hampden (13-6-1) will meet the winner of Saturday’s semifinal between No. 1 Messalonskee and No. 5 John Bapst in the regional final at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Alfond Arena in Orono.
Miller and Wyatt Allen each had a goal and an assist for Hampden. Henry Armell and Aiden MacFarline also scored for the Broncos.
“We’re excited. We couldn’t do it without each other,” Miller said. “All year, we grind every practice. We’re having a blast.”
Cony/Hall-Dale/Monmouth/Winthrop/Erskine finished 14-6. Kyle LePage, Chase Callahan and Jackson Wing scored for the Rams, while Spencer Morgan and Cooper Clark each got an assist. Bourque, a senior, made 25 saves.
Moments into the second overtime, Miller had the puck with just one defender between him and Bourque. Miller was able to keep enough distance between himself and Cony defenseman Gabe Godbout to flick a wrist shot toward the net. The puck slipped between Bourque’s pads, sending the Broncos into a frenzy.
“I was dropping back to play (defense), and I saw the puck dribble out to the middle (of the ice) and I grabbed it,” Miller said. “It was 1-on-1. I used (Godbout) as a screen and went five-hole. It looked like (Bourque) went down before I got it through his five-hole. I didn’t think it went in, but then I saw it hit the back of the net and it was just (relief) from there.”
Hampden took a 1-0 lead when Allen scored on the rebound of a shot by Colby Pangburn late in the first period.
The Broncos squandered a 5-on-3 opportunity in the second period. LePage tied it later in the second before Hampden’s Miles Shields tripped Wing near the net, leading to a penalty shot. Wing took advantage, deking Broncos goalie Aiden Surran to give the Rams the lead.
Arnell tied it with a power-play goal early in the third. Cony went back in front with 5:47 left in regulation when Callahan retrieved a loose puck and knocked it past Surran. The Broncos answered 41 seconds later, however, as MacFarline took a shot off a faceoff that slipped between Bourque’s legs.
“Things weren’t going our way and it would have been easy that, when the wheels came off, everything comes off,” Hampden coach Zach Wilson said. “They stuck together as a team, as a family, and it was just awesome.”
Surran finished with 21 saves.
Cony won the previous two games against Hampden this season, 4-3 on Jan. 10 and 3-2 on Jan. 19.
“We knew we were going to get our chance, and we played close with them,” Miller said. “We were just building each other up, telling each other what we needed to do better (between periods). We just had the motivation going into the game.”
