PORTLAND — William Provost might need stitches, but the Gorham/Massabesic boys hockey team is headed to its second straight regional final, so the senior defensemen probably thinks a puck to the face was worth it.
“Coach always says (to) put our body on the line, protect the house, so all I had to do was just block that shot,” Provost said afterward with a bandage wrapped around his left ear. “Just set the whole tone for the rest of the game. It was awesome.”
The Gorham co-op and Poland/Leavitt/Oak Hill/Gray-New Gloucester combined for five goals in the first period of their Class B South semifinal Saturday night. Then the top-seeded Rams hunkered down defensively to earn a 3-2 win.
Gorham/Massabesic will take on No. 2 York/Biddeford/Old Orchard Beach (16-4) in the regional final at Cross Insurance Arena on Tuesday.

Provost’s block during a 5-on-3 penalty kill midway through the second period exemplified the team’s all-out efforts.
“We were kind of shaky to start the second, if I remember correctly, and then we saw Willie lay out for that block, and we’re like, all right, we gotta dial it in,” senior forward Levi Wagner said. “Coach said, ‘Do it for Willie,’ every single time we went to the bench.”
Gorham/Massabesic (16-4) held off the fourth-seeded Poland co-op (10-9-1), killing another penalty midway through the third period and squashing a last-minute push. Sophomore goalie Grant Peters stopped 28 shots for the Rams.

“We knew going into it, this was going to be a battle,” coach Shawn Sullivan said. “And like you said, it’s been one-goal games both times with them. Today could have gone either way, really. Both teams had a lot of chances, and we put in the work and were fortunate enough to get the win.”
Wagner started the scoring 48 seconds in with a crafty move behind the net. At 2:53, Jaxson Booker matched with a breakaway goal for PLOG. Zach McCormick put Gorham/Massabesic back on top at 4:27 after getting the puck near center ice and weaving through the defense.
Everett Michaud tied the score again at 9:34 with a power-play goal. Wagner scored the winner at 12:23, and said his team was never deterred despite giving up the lead twice.
“We had all three lines rolling, and all the defensemen were firing on all cylinders,” he said. “So, it’s kind of we got to believe in the other guys on the bench, no matter who coach puts out, any goalie that’s in the net, we’re gonna defend it.”
Logan Rousseau made 18 saves for the Kings.
