PORTLAND — Ben Dumais and Ashton Additon know what it feels like to lose in the playoffs.

While at St. Dominic Academy, the seniors never made it past the first round of the postseason.

When second-seeded Cheverus/Yarmouth defeated No. 3 Lewiston/Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse 1-0 in a Class A semifinal Wednesday night at Cross Insurance Arena, they couldn’t help but get excited.

“Happy to finally make it to this rink, and then to make it to a second game in this means a lot to us,” said Dumais.

Cheverus/Yarmouth (14-6) will play for the Class A crown Saturday against top-seeded Thornton Academy, also at Cross Insurance Arena. Thornton is the defending Class A champion, and Cheverus/Yarmouth is seeking a third consecutive title after going back-to-back in Class B in 2024 and 2025.

Dumais scored the only goal in what turned out to be an evenly matched affair against an opponent it played twice during the regular season. Cheverus/Yarmouth won the first matchup, 3-0 at home in December, and Lewiston (13-6-1) took round two, 4-1 at The Colisée in January.

“We knew that we had to make sure that the game plan was tailored to fit what (the Blue Devils) challenge us with,” coach David St. Pierre said. “Second time we played them, we were a little banged up and we didn’t play our best … and we learned a lot from that. Definitely put a game plan together tonight and the boys executed it to a tee.”

Additon played a strong game in net, fending off and swatting away many of Lewiston’s 26 shots.

“We split with (Lewiston) this season, one game I had a shutout, next game they scored four goals,” Additon said. “And I knew I just couldn’t let that happen again.”

Cheverus/Yarmouth took the lead just a minute and 40 seconds into the contest. The rest of the game was as a back-and-forth grind.

The Blue Devils came close to evening the score on several occasions but couldn’t push one past Additon.

“We’ve played many games against (Lewiston), playing travel hockey with them growing up,” Additon said. “It’s good to really just get a beat on those guys we’ve known our whole lives.”

Cheverus/Yarmouth will lean on Additon’s defense and Dumais’ offense, as well as the presence of three other transfers from St. Dom’s, when it plays Thornton Academy at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

“This program’s been really great to us so far,” Dumais said. “There’s five of us, and we’ve been accepted really greatly.”
