Cheverus opened the season with a win over South Portland, and that put the Stags at the top of the first Varsity Maine girls basketball poll of the winter. They never left to top spot. They became the unanimous No. 1 on Jan. 13, and that designation has stuck since. Cheverus, the Class A champion, is still No. 1 in the final poll of the season — and it’s still unanimous.
Hampden Academy, which lost to Cheverus in the Class A final, made huge jumps in the rankings throughout the postseason. The Broncos were a distant 10th after the regular season, then fourth last week after winning the A North title, and after nearly beating Cheverus, they end the season as the state’s second-ranked team.
Class B champion Lawrence made an even bigger postseason rise in the poll. The Bulldogs were unranked before winning the B North title, then sixth and now are fourth. Mattanawcook, the only team in the state to go undefeated this winter, joins the rankings at eighth after winning the Class C championship.
The final Varsity Maine girls basketball poll of 2025-26 features the top 10 teams as voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
