Sarah Hughes scored 18 of her 23 points in the second half as Bates advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament with a 71-57 win Friday in Lewiston against Merchant Marine Academy.

Sophie Spolter added 20 points for the Bobcats (25-3), who will play Smith at 7:15 p.m. Saturday. Spolter was 6 for 9 from the field and 8 of 10 at the free-throw line, while Hughes made 8 of 11 shots, including three 3-pointers.

Bates led 24-9 after one quarter, as seven players scored for the Bobcats in the first 10 minutes. The lead grew to 37-19 by halftime. Merchant Marine (23-5) got as close as eight points late in the game, but Hughes and Spolter combined to go 8 for 8 at the free-throw line in the final minute.

NYU 108, UMAINE-FARMINGTON 44: The two-time defending NCAA Division III champions extended their winning streak to 88 games, rolling past the Beavers in a first-round game in New York.

Brooke Batchelor led the Violets (26-0) with 17 points. Jaydn Pingree scored 18 points for UMF (21-8).

MEN

UMAINE-FARMINGTON 96, MONTCLAIR STATE 84: Jason Reynolds fueled a second-half charge and finished with 25 points and 21 rebounds as the Beavers (23-5) defeated the Red Hawks (25-3) in Montclair, New Jersey.

UMF trailed by nine points in the first half and by seven early in the second half, but the Beavers took the lead for good with a 10-0 run midway through the second half, sparked by two 3-pointers from Brayden St. Pierre.

Reynolds scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the second half. He was joined in double figures by Zach McLaughlin (20), St. Pierre (17) and Gabe Michaud (14).

UMF faces Yeshiva on Saturday.

YESHIVA 71, BATES 69: Max Zakheim was fouled with .2 seconds remaining after rebounding a missed shot by Bates guard Chris Bianco and sank both free throws to give the Maccabees (21-8) a win over the Bobcats (18-9) in an NCAA first-round game in Montclair, New Jersey.

Jamari Robinson scored 19 points for Bates, while Sean O’Leary had 13 points and seven rebounds. Brady Coyne chipped in 12 points and six rebounds.

Zevi Samet scored 27 points and Yair Dovrat added 13 for Yeshiva.

BABSON 71, ST. JOSEPH’S 67: The Monks rallied from nine points down in the second half to take the lead with 1:46 left but couldn’t hang on and were eliminated by the Beavers in Hartford, Connecticut.

St. Joseph’s (20-9) had a 17-game winning streak snapped. Babson (22-6) advances to face the winner of a game between Trinity and Keuka in the second round on Saturday.

St. Joseph’s trailed 57-48 with 9:19 remaining but rallied to take a 67-66 lead on a layup by Davis Mann. Babson answered with a jumper by Timmy Mulvey. The Monks had multiple chances to tie it or take the lead but missed a jumper and turned the ball over twice, including with two seconds left.

The Monks finished with 16 turnovers.

Wani Donato led St. Joseph’s with 19 points. John Paul Frazier added 14, Wani Remijo had 13, Tong Maiwen scored 11, and Mann finished with 10.

Timmy O’Toole recorded 18 points and nine rebounds for Babson.
