In reference to the March 1 article “Mainers Detained by ICE are coming home by the dozens,” the article highlights people who believed they were doing everything right. They had work permits, legal asylum claims and no criminal record. The article says “dozens are being returned to their communities.”
Let’s say three dozen of 206 were arrested and put in detention for weeks, at taxpayers’ expense. That’s roughly 17.5% of the arrests had no legal justification and are thrown out — if they can get/pay for a lawyer. Meanwhile, they lose paychecks, jobs, or can’t pay rent, which affects not only them, but also the local economy.
I can’t comprehend the reality that there are many who deny this happens, or don’t care. The “slippery slope code” contends that once the seal of law and constitutionality is broken, no one is safe when a megalomaniac is in charge.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
