Central Maine Community College raced to a 24-2 lead in the first quarter and was in control the rest of the way as the Mustangs won their fourth United States Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball championship with a 74-46 victory over Miami-Hamilton on Saturday in Buffalo, New York.
The victory capped a 29-1 season for the top-seeded Mustangs, whose only loss was to UMaine-Augusta. CMCC previously won national titles in 2017, 2019 and 2022.
This one was never in doubt. Ava Smith scored the first three baskets, and the Mustangs ended the first quarter with 16 straight points, including eight by Anais Balla Zambo.
The lead grew to 30 points in the second quarter.
Zambo and Breanna Dwyer paced CMCC’s balanced offense with 11 points apiece. Smith had 10 points and 10 rebounds, Caitlyn McCoy scored nine points and Josie Friend added eight.
