The latest Pine Tree State poll showed veteran Graham Platner comfortably leading both Gov. Janet Mills, in the Democratic primary, and Sen. Susan Collins in a general election.
No poll is perfect, but the momentum is clearly behind Platner, and that momentum isn’t confined to polling data. The Lewiston/Auburn Platner volunteers have tripled in number since August.
Platner and his movement is where the energy is at this critical moment. With respect to the governor, I invite her to join us, or at least to get out of our way while we take the party back for the working people who built it.
Mainers prefer Platner, and they dislike Mills by nearly the same margin. If the general election were held today, the burly oysterman would oust Collins by 11 points. Mills edges the five-term incumbent by only 1 point.
While other Democrats are wringing their hands, we are on our feet getting the message out. We know that this election won’t be won by money, but by eye contact. By neighbors looking out for each other. By constant efforts to befriend and persuade. By doing the things we are actively doing day by day, week by week.
