Pittston will expand its board of selectmen from three to five members following a vote at a special town meeting Saturday.

Voters gathered at the Pittston/Randolph Consolidated School also rejected a proposal to change the road commissioner’s position from elected to appointed, with 75 residents voting yes and 98 voting no.

Nomination papers are now available at the town office on Whitefield Road for the new 1- and 2-year terms on the select board; the shortened terms are intended to spread out the election dates of the new positions. One of the existing 3-year seats on the board is up for election.

Currently, selectmen are paid $8,000 a year. Town Clerk Valerie Hanson said that because the budget for the next fiscal year is now being developed, it’s not clear whether the five selectmen will be paid $8,000 each or the $24,000 designated for the selectmen will be divided five ways instead of three.

The town is also seeking candidates for planning board, budget committee, the Gardiner-area school board and road commissioner, among others.

The deadline to turn in nominating papers is the close of business on April 30.

Hanson said the town election will take place June 9, coinciding with the state primary. The annual town meeting will be held at 9:45 a.m. June 6 at the Pittston/Randolph Consolidated School on School Street.
