A recent news report (Feb. 21) asked whether Maine’s next governor could be an independent; specifically, it covered Rick Bennett. I certainly hope Bennett will be our next governor.
I first came to know Rick Bennett through his work addressing the corrupting influence of money in politics. He is a leader in that effort, together with groups like the nonpartisan American Promise. They are bringing Americans from across the political spectrum together to make their voices heard and not be drowned out by the flood of dark messaging by big money interests.
The arms race of political spending has enveloped our major political parties. Political ads bury us in misleading and divisive advertising. Fortunately, there are thoughtful independent leaders like Rick Bennett to show us another way. It is time to get out of our silos and come together as individuals for the good of our shared community. Supporting independent candidates beholden to the people, not the parties, is a strong step in that direction.
