Gary Lauren McFarland
CANTON – Gary Lauren McFarland, 73, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, in Canton, at Pinnacle Health and Rehab. Born on Feb. 16, 1953, in Augusta, Gary was the son of the late Fred Russell McFarland Jr., and Catherina Bond McFarland.
Gary grew up in Augusta and graduated from Cony High School before pursuing higher education at the University of Maine in Orono. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, which laid the foundation for his professional endeavors. Gary began his career working alongside his father at the McFarland Sales Company automobile dealership in Augusta. Later, he became a partner in Bouffard and McFarland Home Builders in the Auburn, Maine, area where he contributed to building homes and communities with dedication and care.
Known for his mild-mannered and kind nature, Gary was easygoing yet hardworking – a combination that endeared him to those who knew him. Despite facing significant health challenges later in life, including early-onset Parkinson’s disease, and later, Lewy body dementia, Gary approached life with quiet strength and resilience. In 2024, as his health needs increased, he transitioned to nursing home care.
Gary is survived by his sister, Carolyn Filauro, brothers-in-law, Anthony Filauro and Dale Glidden, several nieces and nephews, and many cousins, along with some very caring and supportive lifelong friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred Russell McFarland Jr. and Catherina Bond McFarland, and his sister, Janice Glidden.
Memories of Gary will be cherished by those who knew him. May his legacy of kindness and perseverance bring comfort to all who mourn his passing. A small family gathering will take place this summer.
The family requests that donations in Gary’s memory be directed to Parkinson’s Foundation.
