Three men were arrested early Wednesday morning after police say they attempted to rob two credit union ATMs in Augusta.

Augusta police responded to Trademark Federal Credit Union on Edison Drive late Tuesday evening for a burglary alarm, and then responded to Connected Credit Union on Civic Center Drive for a similar alarm shortly after midnight, Chief Kevin Lully said in a news release Thursday.

Police encountered a dark Toyota sedan upon arriving at the second bank, Lully said. The car fled “at a high rate of speed,” he said, but was later stopped.

The three occupants were arrested and charged with burglary and criminal mischief.

The men were each set to be held at the Kennebec County Jail on a $20,000 bail, but U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement took custody of the men, Lully said.

Lully did not say where the men were from or where they are being held now.
