Between 2018 and 2024, Jeff Hewett of Cape Elizabeth visited all of Maine’s 454 incorporated towns and cities.

In a rapid-fire Q&A, we asked him for takeaways from his travels, including the prettiest —and most overrated — spots in the state. Here are his answers, lightly edited for clarity.

What town should everyone visit once?

I would say Eastport, because I don’t think people ever really go that far down. They might go to Ellsworth or Bar Harbor. That’s probably where people stop. Or Fort Kent. Go all the way to the top of Maine.

Where could you go over and over again?

My friends and I do go to Washington County every year, Cutler. Beautiful hiking.

What’s the most overrated town?

I don’t think there’s that much to see in Belfast.

What about the most underrated, a hidden gem?

Cornish is a fun little town. Bridgton is a fun place to visit — look at all the shops, there’s places to eat. I like Ellsworth. I think there’s a lot to see.

Where did you find the friendliest people?

In The County, definitely in Aroostook.

Where is the most beautiful scenery?

That would be Down East, from Bar Harbor down to Lubec. It’s so dramatic, especially on the Bold Coast.

If you left Cape Elizabeth, where would you chose to live?

I would probably move to someplace like Camden. It’s a pretty town.
